We also have a teeny-tiny, microscopic attention span for fakeness. We scroll endlessly through storytimes or GRWM TikToks, bombarded with people ranting about their latest rock bottom in life, like they’re on FaceTime to their mum. This is why I can sniff out insincerity on reality TV from a mile off.

Unfortunately, as if I now have a smoke alarm installed for this very thing, the latest Love Island series made mine ring out like a bloody Ring Doorbell.

My worst fears were confirmed due to the disgusting number of podcasts in which islanders claimed their peers were brand-deal-obsessed.

This all put a bad taste in my mouth. So I naturally had to go on a detox. Therefore, I watched some real reality TV. Love Island series 3. I was soothed and brought back down to earth by the serial chain-smoking and islanders squaring up to each other in a manner comparable to Connor McGregor. Aswell as incidents that today would send a flurry of Ofcom complaints and Women’s Aid statements. I finally feel relaxed.

At a push, this years 2026 series a, we got phrases such as ‘that’s a bit snakey after altercations. Please call it as they did back in the day, “you’re a fucking snake.”

Let me lay out the key differences that make Series 3 simply a better watch than every other attempt. Every season we see a shock recoupling when one person out of a strong couple is suddenly dumped from the island. Leaving the other half of the couple devastated. Historical instances include: Ellie couldn’t watch Finley leave alone, Uma couldn’t watch Will leave alone, and in season 3, Dom couldn’t watch Jess leave…. without saying goodbye. He let her walk out the door alone, suitcase in hand. He then proceeded to collapse on the floor, crying. Absolute cinema

Dom had no fears about being called inauthentic, making him pack his suitcase. Why would he pack up his trunks? He’s gonna need them for a Lilo race tomorrow.

Dom was then told rumours that Jess had actually got off with her fellow dumpee two minutes after leaving… we just don’t see chaos like this anymore.

Chris and Kems ‘ bromance will also go down in history.. I still watch the Chris and Kem bromance YouTube compilations to this day. Chris, on arrival, was voted in the bottom couple. That didn’t stop Kem from sticking to him like glue, which would be a miraculous occurrence these days. Now we see ppl clawing for the affections of the most loved. Like how Simba suddenly clung on Julia’s every word after she was voted most favourite. It reminded me of the way Kim K used to hide in Paris Hilton’s paparazzi shots. Do you see Kim K and Paris hang out now? I rest my case

I’ve also lost belief in the winners themselves. Julia and Lorenzo took home the 50k this year, and as soon as that man got his phone back, he went on an Instagram spree, liking pictures of bikini-clad models. Interesting. It’s not like he’d been living with multiple of them for 8 weeks. Clearly, his thirst was not quenched.

Even though the majority of series 3 couples are no longer together, at least we got to see their relationships genuinely progress a bit before their explosive fallings out. Like how Gabby and Marcel dated for 9 whole months before he cheated on her on in Mexico. Yes, on their couple’s holiday.

Instead of these antics, we can quickly expect one of those black Instagram screens from this year’s winners, “thanks for eveyone whos invested in our journey, but work pressures blah blah blah. Yawn. its like nowadays the winners have their break-up day planned and set from the moment they leave the villa. Their maturity bores me.

To end, I should mention that there are a couple who are still together from series three, almost 10 years later. It’s Jess and Dom, the one who didn’t leave with her when she was dumped. Probably because she knows she’s got a real one.

Why Love Island season 3 can never and will never be recreated These days, we all have a shockingly short attention span.
